Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies for Springtime

The changing of seasons causes huge shifts in the mind and body in the world of Ayurveda. The transition into springtime is an important time to make sure we are caring for our bodies properly, avoiding the imbalances that can occur during this time. Springtime is associated with Kapha, the dosha associated with earth and water.

During winter, we accumulate Kapha, and much like the ice of winter melts as we transition into spring, this Kapha melts, or releases as the days begin to warm and lengthen. If we are not properly caring for our bodies, this transition can cause Kapha imbalances such as allergies, excess mucus, sluggish digestion, and fatigue.

Herbs are a powerful way to assist our bodies during seasonal transitions and keep our doshas balanced. Herbs with warm, bitter, and stimulating qualities are wonderful for Kapha imbalances.

Incorporate the following herbs into your rotation to help your body and mind transition seamlessly into springtime.

Chitrak

Chitrak (Plumbago zeylanica) is an herb that is hot in quality, used for strengthening the digestive fire. It helps promote healthy digestion, elimination, and assists those with Kapha imbalances manage weight. Chitrak also supports healthy metabolism and removes natural toxins from the intestines. It can be taken in both powder or capsule form and is an excellent option in the springtime to keep Kapha at bay.

Pippali

Pippali (Piper longum) is a relative of the common cooking spice, black pepper. It is a pungent herb and is hot in quality, helping to increase the digestive fire and counteract excess cold and Kapha in the system. Pippali supports healthy metabolism and promotes respiratory health, supporting clear and comfortable breathing. Pippali can be taken in powder form or mixed into a tea or hot drink to activate agni and balance excess Kapha.

Punarnava

Punarnava, or Boerhaavia diffusa, is a rejuvenating herb that helps balance all three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. It promotes healthy weight management for those with Kapha constitution who easily gain weight and have trouble losing it. It supports healthy heart, liver, and kidney function. Punarnava also supports proper elimination for comfortable fluid levels, keeping the body free of excess Kapha. This potent herb can be taken orally in powder or capsule form.

Turmeric

The popular Indian root, Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a wonderful herb to help balance Kapha, especially in the springtime. It is a heating spice that cleanses the blood and supports healthy skin. It promotes healthy digestion and elimination through boosting Agni and clearing the GI tract of toxins. Turmeric also supports joint health and comfortable mobility. Turmeric can be added to milk, water, or consumed in capsules.

Kapha Balancing Golden Milk

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups almond milk
  • 1 cup filtered water
  • 1 tsp turmeric
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp Punarnava
  • ⅛ tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp honey (or maple syrup)

Directions:

  1. Add the almond milk and water to a medium sized pot over medium low heat. Add the turmeric, cinnamon, punarnava, and black pepper. Whisk to combine.
  2. Heat the mixture on a low simmer for 5 minutes. When finished, remove from heat and allow to cool slightly. When the beverage is at a comfortable drinking temperature, mix in honey. Sip and enjoy.
