Not many of us are tapped into our creative potential all of the time, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could access it more often? Creativity is innate to our being, but it can feel difficult to move beyond the noise of the mind enough to tap into this place on a regular basis. Meditation provides us the chance to step into the seat of the witness and calm down our mental chatter– making it easier to access this creative nature.
Meditation can help us clear the obstructions from the mind so we can open up to new ideas and possibilities. This meditation and breath-work practice was designed to clear mental stagnation and expand your mind and heart to new creative possibilities. Practice when you’re feeling blocked or implement it in your daily routine to get the creative juices flowing.
Breath Practice and Meditation for Creativity
Find somewhere you will not be disturbed and can set a relaxing tone for your practice. Begin in a comfortable seat, sitting in a relaxed and upright position on the floor, your bed, or a chair. Take a few deep, diaphragmatic breaths to settle into your body, expanding your belly with every inhale.
Place your palms on your shoulders and extend your elbows out to the side, parallel to the floor. Sit up straight and on your inhale, twist to your left. On your exhale, twist to your right. Engage your core and continue this pattern for ten cycles. Take a breath to settle, and either repeat for one more round or return to a slow, natural breath for a few moments.
Let go of any breath control, and direct your awareness back to the body. Begin to feel where your seat is in contact with the earth, and slowly scan up your body as you breathe until your awareness is at the crown of your head. Begin to imagine that you are breathing from your crown, inhaling through the top of your head and filling your body, and as you exhale allowing the air to leave the same way it came. Now, visualize a bright, golden sun about thirty feet above your head. As you inhale, imagine breathing the warm, golden light from this sun into your entire body, clearing any stagnation and filling it up with the energy of inspiration and clarity. Continue with this, inviting in a sense of joy and lightness with every breath. Imagine the warm rays of the sun melting away anything blocking you and allow it to flood your body with new ideas and creative potential. Meditate here for five to ten minutes.
When you are finished, let go of the visualization and redirect your awareness back to your body and the space around you. After a few moments, slowly blink your eyes open and return to the room around you. Take a few minutes to journal any insights that came to you during your meditation and carry the energy from this practice with you through the rest of your day.
